Gyro compasses (gyros) are widely used for navigation in commercial shipping, as they remain unaffected even by ferromagnetic materials.
It is recommended to replace the gyro ball every 3 years to avoid the risk of failure of the device and the resulting demurrage due to Port State Control requirements.
